Adding Flare to a Traditional Southern Home

*This is a sponsored post, which means I have been paid by Faux Brickwork to write this post; however, as always, all opinions are entirely my own. Thank you all for continuing to support my blog. It means the world to me!
I love the look of a southern home. We are located in Florida and Georgia (one house close to the beach and one house in the mountains), so we are in the heart of the south, and I just love it. One thing that I have noticed, though, is that a lot of southern homes look exactly the same. A wrap around porch, white banisters, an American flag, and a huge overflowing tree in the front yard to provide shade. Many times, they will even have rocking chairs on the front porch. While this style is so gorgeous and timeless, I also think it can be boring to blend in completely, which is why I think it is important to add your own flare to a traditional southern home. “Flare” looks different to everyone, and it honestly just depends completely on your preferences and likes. I have come up with a few ideas of my own, and I hope this helps you get started customizing your own traditional southern home! Here are some unique ways to add flare to your home:

Change up the flooring
Most traditional homes have gorgeous hardwood floors, and/or tile. This is not a bad thing at all! In fact, having traditional hardwoods can boost the value of your home and they will also help attract potential buyers, when it’s time to sell. On the other hand, if you add flooring that more likely matches your style, or gives your home flare, it could be really fun and look good, as well. In Florida, it can get very hot in the summer and oftentimes extend into the spring and fall. This is why I thought of the idea of incorporating tile that looks like wood. This will keep your feet (and home) cooler, while still looking like traditional wood floors. If you want to go the complete opposite direction and purchase something that does not look like wood floors, I would look into fun, but simple designs that will enhance your other decor in your home. Something as simple as a colorful bathroom tile, can add a fun touch. If you search Pinterest, you are sure to find something great!

Find interesting artwork
Adding interesting artwork to your home is the perfect way to add flare and make your home stand out! The great thing about choosing artwork for your home is that it is all up to your likes and dislikes. Artwork is easy to hang up and take down, and it will not deter future home buyers because they know you can just take it with you. When you are picking out new art for your home, make sure you consider the other colors in your home.

Incorporate a theme
Incorporating a theme will either be your cup of tea, or you will hate the idea. I personally think it would be extremely fun to create a beach-themed home, or a cozy mountain cabin, but your theme does not have to be dependent on where you live. If you live in the heart of New York City and love the beach, go for it! There really are no set rules for designing your home, all you need to worry about is figuring out what you love and what your style is. I love animals and nature, so you will almost always find bunnies and birds all around my homes and lots of greenery.

Add an accent wall
To stick with a traditional style southern home, but also add some flare, a good option would be a brick accent wall, perhaps in the kitchen, or on the fireplace wall. Unfortunately, brick is very costly and time consuming when it comes to building or doing renovations, so for a lot of people, I thought brick could be cost prohibitive. Then, I started searching around and came across Faux Brickwork, based out of Clearwater, Florida. They sell exceptionally authentic looking brickwork panels that are made with high quality materials. This gives you the look and feel you want when it comes to brick, but it cuts down on the cost and time that it would normally take to install a brick accent wall. Cool, right? I have not used them personally, but I have looked over their website and they look very interesting are are certainly a company I would consider in adding elements to my own home. Apparently, the film industry has used them frequently in the past for film sets, and Faux Brickwork has now introduced them to the full U.S. market. The faux brickwork panels are lightweight and cost effective, making it easy to purchase and install yourself. Made from plaster, the panels are designed to slot into one another and are secured by adhesive, screws, or staples. When you purchase your panels from Faux Brickwork, they include an install guide, making it easy on you. Look how gorgeous, and real, this faux brick wall below looks! I've really been thinking of doing something unique as a kitchen backsplash, and I'm loving this!

Surround yourself with memories
Add pictures of family members, souvenirs from travel, and important milestone memorabilia. This will help you stay family-centered and it will give you happy memories to think about each and every day. I love perching old family photos around my home to remind me of my loved ones.

As always, I hope you guys have enjoyed my post, and please feel free to leave me a comment or question below! I really enjoy hearing from you! I hope you have fun and relaxing weekend ahead!

XOXO,

Julie
